How to Avoid Firework Mishaps

December 28, 2017

As we approach New Year's Eve, it is important to recall firework safety protocols. As fun and exciting as firework displays are, fireworks are not a toy. Misuse of fireworks can have potential serious consequences, such as property damage, bodily injury, or even death.

By following these safety tips, you can avoid a painful trip to the ER:

- Follow the directions and cautionary labels on packaging closely

- Ignite fireworks in a clear open outdoor area

- Do not use fireworks indoors or near any overhead obstructions, like trees or porches

- Keep children away from firework lighting zone

- Do not hold or light fireworks in your hand. It could potentially explode and injury you

- Follow regulations or local laws about firework use in your area

- Have water, a hose or fire extinguisher ready in case of a fire

- Use a bucket of water to dispose used sparklers or other similar products

- Do not immediately pick up or try to relight "dud" fireworks. They may potentially go off unexpectedly

- If you have pets, bring them inside
