Holiday Travel Safety

December 22, 2017

A record number of people in the U.S. will be traveling during the Christmas/ New Year holidays this year. With this record, it is more important than ever to remember holiday travel safety tips.

Whether you are traveling to be with family or a holiday vacation destination, it is important to keep safety in mind. The following tips can help you have a happy and safe holiday.

Travel Safety Tips

  • Get plenty of rest and stay alert while traveling, especially if you are driving

  • Criminals do not take the holidays off, stay alert to the potential for crime

  • Secure valuables in a locked area of the vehicle out of site, gifts are attractive to criminals, as well as children

  • Monitor weather conditions for your point of departure, route and final destination and plan accordingly

  • If driving, plan your route and prepare. Familiarize yourself with alternate routes given the likelihood for traffic delays

  • If you will be driving in snow or ice, make sure to check the snow/ice related equipment on your vehicle, take your time and avoid sudden stops or acceleration

  • Remind children to avoid strangers who may use holiday related enticements to attract them

  • Avoid the temptation to carry more passengers than you have seat-belts for, every rider should be secured

  • If traveling by air, remember to stay hydrated by drinking non-caffeinated beverages

  • No matter the travel means, avoid long periods of immobility so as to minimize the risk of blood clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT) that may result from reduced circulation in the legs

Maintain your focus on safety during this happy season in order to give you and your family the gift of a safe homecoming.
