William Bracken Honored with Outstanding Private Sector Initiatives Award
William Bracken of Bracken Engineering, Inc. is no stranger to natural disaster. After many years that his company has responded to sinkholes, collapsed buildings, and post-hurricane sites throughout Florida, Mr. Bracken noticed the strain disasters put on local resources, particularly on building departments’ engineering staffs. To help combat these shortages, Mr. Bracken—an experienced first and second responder—began paying for his staff to become trained as second responders. In 2016, 20 of his engineers became certified as second responders, and Bracken Engineering now has the largest certified second responder staff in the country. Additionally, the entire Bracken Engineering staff has been trained in basic first aid and CPR. Mr. Bracken serves as a structural collapse instructor and has been on 10 urban search and rescue hurricane deployments. He has also given his presentation, “After Disaster Strikes” and “Don’t Let Your Disaster Plan be a Disaster,” throughout the country and has published an article in Insights Magazine titled “How to Protect Your Biggest Investment Against Wind and Flood Damage.” Due to Mr. Bracken’s efforts and generosity, his employees have donated hundreds of hours assisting FEMA, states, counties, local building departments, and first responders.
